Some of the Top Reasons Why Your AC Can Go Bad

During hot days you usually rely on your air conditioner to cool you down throughout the day. A lot of people have become dependent on it and see their AC units as their sole deliverance from the stifling heat. Since these units are just machines, they are liable to break down at some point and that can be hard on some.

It thus might help to know the common things that can go wrong with your air conditioner. Once you know those common issues, then you might be able to perform some preventive steps to help keep your machine last longer.

1. One of the most common reasons why your AC can go bad is when the filter in the unit becomes clogged. That is bound to happen because the filter is bound to accumulate solid particles that it gathers from the air passing through it. When this happens the unit is unable to "breathe" properly. Ice starts to form inside.

This can be resolved easily enough by turning off the unit and replacing the air filter. That's not a complicated thing to do since the air filter is just at the front. Wait for a few hours before turning it back on so that the ice can melt.

2. Aside from the air filter of your AC, the fins can become clogged as well - which can cause it not to work properly. You can use a small brush to get it cleaned. Most of the time, this simple cleaning step should be enough to remove the clog and get your unit to work once again.

3. Your air conditioner is able to cool down the air that passes through it by using a refrigerant which is a chemical called Freon. Now as time passes by the unit can develop some leaks, causing the Freon to escape and when that happens the ability of your AC to cool the air that passes through it is greatly reduced.

You can buy a gauge which would allow you to measure the pressure of the refrigerant contained in the unit. You cannot replace it yourself because only a licensed repairman can do that. You should have technicians checking that regularly.

4. When you notice that the fan is not turning even when the thermostat is set for cold temperature, then it is possible that the problem is with some burnt wire. If that is the case then it is something beyond what you can repair yourself, but there are times though that the problem is with wires that have come lose and so you can just shake the unit.

5. If the unit fails to work completely and shows no indication of being turned on then check if it is getting power. Sometimes people call in technicians without checking first if the unit was getting power at all. Look at the circuit breaker first before you call in a repairman.

These are just some of the most common causes of problems with air conditioners.
